Marlowe, Christopher
(bautizado 26 feb. 1564, Canterbury, Kent, Inglaterra–30 may. 1593, Deptford, cerca de Londres).

Dramaturgo y poeta británico. Hijo de un zapatero de Canterbury, logró graduarse en la Universidad de Cambridge. En 1587 comenzó a escribir obras para algunos teatros londinenses, y su primera pieza Tamerlán, el grande (publicada en 1590), estableció el verso blanco en el teatro. Posteriormente escribió Tragedia de Dido; Reina de Cartago; (publicada en 1594), coescrita con Thomas Nashe; La matanza de Paris ( 1594) y Eduardo II (1594). Su obra más famosa es La trágica historia del Doctor Fausto (publicada en 1604), que ocupa el marco dramático de una moralidad, (ver moralidades) y revela una historia de tentación, pecado y condena. El judío de Malta (publicada en 1633) fue quizá su última obra. Su poesía incluye el largo poema inconcluso Hero y Leandro. Conocido por su conducta escandalosa, falleció en forma violenta en una riña en una taberna a la edad de 29 años, supuestamente asesinado por ser un espía gubernamental. Su brillante, aunque breve carrera lo estableció como el más importante dramaturgo inglés de su época después de William Shakespeare.
